So what’s your new year’s resolution? Mine is to change up my creativity and try new things. No matter what your particular brand of creativity centers on, you’ve got to keep it fresh.
The best way to do that is try something completely new and uncomfortable. Go on a trip to someplace you haven’t thought of visiting before. Join a new club that includes an activity you haven’t tried before. You’d be surprised just how much a dramatic shift of perspective can jostle you in a fresh new direction with what is already known and comfortable to you.
Heck, why not even try some dating apps just to meet new people! Try a style of clothing that’s not ‘you’. You never know what you’ll discover about ‘you’!
And whatever you do, don’t take yourself so seriously. If you happen to be a writer like me, write something completely insane. Write something funny, even if you’re the only one who thinks it’s funny. Write something out of character for yourself. Send a character on a dumb adventure. Just have fun.
Find something new you want to learn about and learn out loud. Take others on the journey of what you’re learning (be that a new topic, a new genre, a new medium). Teach them what you’re discovering about the subject. Find new things to explore. Find a rule that you know well and break it.
And be sure to tell me of your experiences! Life truly IS an adventure and a wild safari – make the most of it!
Happy New Year!
